The cosmetics industry frequently undergoes regulatory updates to protect consumer safety and well-being. These updates are proactive measures, ensuring products remain compliant with the latest scientific research and safety standards. This is not a product recall; current products remain safe to use.
Such regulatory changes are determined by bodies such as the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and occur either annually or as needed, based on emerging scientific evidence. The latest regulation prohibits the use of Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO) in cosmetic products from 1 September 2025 across the EU.
Following further review of UK legislation and guidance aligned with Trading Standards, updated timelines for Great Britain have now been confirmed:
- 15 August 2026 – Products containing TPO must not be placed on the GB market for the first time after this date
- 14 February 2027 – Final deadline for brands and distributors to sell through existing stock
Products purchased before these deadlines can continue to be used by professionals after February 2027 until they run out.
TPO is a photoinitiator used in gel polish formulations. It initiates the polymerisation process under UV or LED light, allowing the gel to cure and harden. It has been widely used within the nail industry due to its low yellowing properties and broad UV absorption spectrum.
For our EU customers:
We can confirm that 100% of The GelBottle products sold in the EU are fully TPO-free and compliant with the September 2025 regulation.
For our UK/US customers:
We are actively transitioning our range to TPO-free formulations, with reformulated products already rolling out. We expect the full range to be updated ahead of the UK regulatory deadline in August 2026.
